A three-stage centrifugal blower for a medical ventilator was designed, fabricated, and tested for a biomedical engineering company. The design challenges included requirements for a very wide flow range, high efficiency to reduce motor power requirements, and low noise. This clean-sheet design involved meanline and three-dimensional aerodynamic design and CFD analysis, mechanical design and solid modeling, structural analysis, high-speed motor selection, bearing selection and rotordynamic analysis, and cycle modeling in air and various air-oxygen mixtures. Turbo Solutions completed detailed manufacturing drawings for all components of the machine, procured the parts, and assembled and tested the entire machine in our shop. Turbo Solutions assisted with follow-on on-site test and development work at the client’s facility. The blower is currently undergoing final testing in preparation for product launch.
